Lipton tea, one of the most popular tea brands in the world, was founded by Sir Thomas Lipton in 1890. Motivated to provide mid-range affordable tea to the patrons of his supermarket chain, Lipton invested in his own tea plantations in Sri Lanka. Having cut the middle-man cost involved in purchasing tea, he also managed to package and ship the tea at a nominal rate thereby providing the consumer with reasonably priced good quality tea.
